4.0 out of 5 starssimplicity means a loss of conveniencesMay 19, 2012
By Seth T. Vuletich

This vacuum is by far the simplest I have ever used, I think the manual only listed 13 parts on the upright. So if you are wondering why these are used in hotels and such, it is because they are simple and reliable. The upright does not have a filter, it does not have a height adjustment, and it has no hose attachment. This is good because there is less to break, and fewer failure points; in the unlikely case that a major component fails it is easy to fix as well. I was looking at a dyson in the store and while trying to release it from the upright position I managed to release some piece of plastic that did God knows what; while I consider myself fairly handy, I could no for the life of get the piece back on properly, I saw this as sign of things to come and went with a vacuum that a trained chimp could assemble, no offense to the Americans who assembled my unit. This lack of complexity also means some inconvenience, the lack of hose for attachments is a downright pain. The canister vacuum that comes with the upright is necessary for stairs, furniture, and dusting applications, so it is good that it is included, but it has its own issues. No height adjustment on the upright means that the beater bar may or may not work effectively and efficiently on your carpet. For me the vacuum works well, but it is not great for doing stairs. Although it is nearly as mobile as a canister vacuum due to its light weight and ability to go nearly flat, it doesn't get into corners too well. A second problem area is bare floors, the beater bar runs when the vacuum is on, so even with it set to the lower of two speeds this could still scuff floors. The canister sucks in all the ways a vacuum should, but it also sucks some ways that a vacuum shouldn't. It has fine suction, is light weight, and comes with all the attachments one could dream of. The trouble is that it is made to be carried at all times while vacuuming, put it down with the handle up and it is sure to fall to its side. The hose is also somewhat short which makes putting down the vacuum necessary at certain points, this may not be the case for everyone, as I'm 6' 4" tall the hose being short means that I bend over or kneel far enough that the vacuum will touch the ground when vacuuming under things. The hose and attachments may also fall apart during vacuuming because it has no locking mechanism. The attachments mentioned earlier are too abundant to all fit on board the canister vacuum, which is another mild inconvenience. So while the canister is made to be mobile, it is not great at it. Some wheels and a little more space for tools would do a lot for this canister vac. These tradeoffs are typical for vacuums and over all this is one of the better vacuums have owned, still it is far from perfect.
